Nitrous Oxide

Occasionally your child may need more than tender loving care to feel comfortable while getting dental care. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is a safe, effective method of soothing a child’s fear of the dental visit.

What is it?

Nitrous oxide/oxygen is a blend of two gases – oxygen and nitrous oxide It is removed from the body by regular breathing.

How it will make your child feel?

Your child will smell a sweet, pleasant aroma (we have several – orange, strawberry, vanilla, bubblegum). Your child will experience a sense of well-being and relaxation.

It is safe?

Nitrous oxide/oxygen is the safest sedative in dentistry. It is mild, easy to use and rapidly removed from the body. Your child remains conscious with all his/her natural reflexes.

Special instructions

Give your child little or no food before the dental visit, (Occasionally, nausea or vomiting occurs when a child has a full stomach.) Tell Dr. Vera about any respiratory condition that makes breathing through the nose difficult for your child. It may limit the effectiveness of nitrous oxide/oxygen. Third, let Dr. Vera know if your child is taking any medication on the day of the appointment.

Nitrous oxide does not work for all children

Nitrous oxide/oxygen is not effective for some children, especially those who have severe anxiety, nasal congestion, extensive treatment needs, or discomfort wearing a nasal mask. Dr. Vera has comprehensive specialty training and can offer other sedation methods that are right for your child.
